5 out of 5 stars De'Longhi F18316S   March 22, 2010

I have been reticent about using a deep fat fryer since early childhood when my mum used to fry in an open saucepan. This is the first deep fat fryer I have ever used myself and was chosen for the features that make it sound less alarming than other models on the market; the most notable of which is the fact that the lid stays closed when food is placed into and removed from the oil.

Features

The bowl has a sloped interior, with minimum and maximum oil markings etched onto the sides, which make it easy to fill to the correct level. The food basket rotates once it has been lowered into the oil and the food moves into and out of the oil as it goes around. This design means that you do not use as much oil as other fryers and does not appear to be to the detriment of the food cooked.

You can look at the food cooking through a viewing window, supposedly without opening the lid; in fact it is difficult to view items cooking because condensation immediately prevents a clear view once food enters the oil. It is possible to get a vague indication of whether things have started to brown, but the only real way to tell is to lift the lid, so the window is not as useful as it sounds.

The basket sits above the oil and can thus be filled before the lid is closed and the fryer is switched on. A light indicates when the oil has reached the selected cooking temperature and food is then lowered into the oil without the lid needing to be opened - so no need to worry about splashing oil.

Temperature selection is via a dial on the front. This feels rather flimsy to me but seems to do the job. There is an integral timer but I have chosen not to use this as it does not turn the fryer off.

Performance

I have managed to achieve good results with the food crisp and evenly cooked. The fryer takes a few minutes to reach cooking temperature and is quick to recover at the start of cooking, even when frozen food is fried.

The fryer has integral filters that do seem to prevent a fatty build up in the kitchen and also dampen cooking aromas (but do not totally remove them). A lot of steam is generated so I place the fryer on the hob and run the cooker hood.

Cleaning

I recall my mum's frying pan was impossible to clean but it is simple with this fryer. Oil removal is surprisingly easy, draining through a tube and filtered into a supplied container. The bowl is non stick and can be filled with hot, soapy water, which drains through the same tube as the oil. The basket comes up well hand washed, as does the lid.

Summary

I am pleased with my choice. I like the fact that the design of the fryer means that the lid can be closed when food is inserted into the oil. Although I would have liked a timer that actually switches the unit off, I would never leave it unattended so this does not affect my overall impression of the fryer. The fact that it also needs less oil to fry reduces the running costs and quantity of oil that needs to be changed periodically, leads me to a five star rating.

Thought this was rather expensive for a fryer but was attracted by the promise of less fat required for use. I must say it has exceeded my expectations and cooks lovely chips! It also looks good enough to store on top of worksurface, unlike some of the genre. Definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A great Deep Fryer!   June 5, 2009

Like the other reviewers I am very impressed with this product. It is certainly not the cheapest deep fryer but it IS extremely good! The easy clean is just that and the rotating metal basket means you need a lot less oil to fry in which means that it should start saving you money in the long run. I love the really effective filter built into the lid and now the kitchen no longer smells like a chip shop after frying, and just as importantly the cupboards/shelves/contents of the kitchen no longer get covered with a layer of grease which means cleaning is much much easier! I actually bought it to try and produce proper crispy sweet potato fries (like the ones they sell in American restaurants like O'Charley's) and while it's not quite like being back in Memphis, it is extremely close, giving much better results than trying to oven bake them!
All in all a very good product highly recommended.

We have been disapointed with other deep fat fryers recently. but bought
the delonghi roto fryer with some trepidation, but it has lived up to its
reputation. We are particularly pleased with the emptying and storing features.

We already owned a DeLonghi Rotofryer which we'd had for many years. It just needed updating.
We are delighted with the new one - it fries our chips much quicker and to the deep brown colour that we favour. It is also very stylish and easy to clean.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
Just make sure you have a largish space in which to store it.
And do buy the filters at the same time.
